Just an hour’s drive, depending on traffic, or a 45-minute train ride away from Pompeii is the coastal town of Sorrento. In Sorrento, time slows. It’s where every moment is an aesthetic image waiting to be posted. The town sits majestically on cliffs that overlook the azure waters of the Bay of Naples. At sunset, […]
If you are new here, I’ll get you up to speed. This day trip to Pompeii is part of a more extensive vacation where I tour Italy and Greece, also known as my Euro Summer 2 trip (#ES2). After spending a few days in Rome, it was time to head south to Pompeii. Remarkably preserved […]
After spending the afternoon walking around Rome, taking pictures, and sipping Bellinis while looking at the Pantheon, it was time to test my cooking skills. I don’t think I’m a good cook, I know I’m a great cook, but pasta-making was a little difficult. We attended InRome Cooking‘s three-hour class, and it was a very […]
If you haven’t scrolled through your feed and seen a Euro Summer takeover, I’m not sure what side of social media you are on. The last time I stepped off a plane in Europe was two years ago when I visited London, Paris, and Barcelona. That trip triggered a chain of events in my life […]
Can't get enough? Here's more 😏
After the wave of Cam Newton and Nick Cannon’s interviews, Dr. Cheyenne Bryant doubles down on her stance on familiar dysfunction in the Black family and explains how she defines “broken homes.” In this Breakfast Club interview, Dr. Bryant urges for a cultural shift and conversation between Black men and women about how we do family.
If you missed the memo, i.e., you haven’t been on TikTok, let me catch you up. There’s been a lot of discourse online about having children before marriage, having multiple children with different people, and the family stereotypes of Black Americans. What do you imagine when you think of the Black family today? Do you see a two-parent household? The number of single-parent households in the black community continues to increase, and public figures like Dr. Bryant are speaking out.
While at the Breakfast Club, Dr. Bryant urges for a cultural shift in the black community and how we approach family. The media and celebrities like Cam Newton and Nick Cannon have modeled, in Dr. Bryant’s words, an extreme level of low functioning. Both men have multiple children, with numerous women creating broken homes; instead of prioritizing one partner, they’d rather juggle various, and their children are collateral damage in the process.
According to Dr.Bryant, there is a difference between a broken home and a broken house. To her, a broken house is just a single-family or one-parent household, whereas a broken home is a two-party household, but the home is so impaired that it has a low level of functionality.
To cure this damage and dysfunction, Dr. Bryant is calling for fewer baby daddies and more husbands. While scrolling, I rarely saw people disagree. It is time to be more intentional as a culture with who and how we create life.
I know I am not the only one who feels this shift happening. I often see online comments when our favorite influencers and celebrities announce pregnancy, pointing out there are so many baby announcements and no proposals.
Everyone talks a good game online, but will these talks translate in real life? Do you think this is a real issue in the black community or just internet fodder?
